Don joined the Pennant Hills Photographic Club in 2012 as a novice. He has taken occasional workshops (such as with the now defunct Australian Centre for Photography), but mostly has learned from other members in the Club, and through study of the "old masters" (such as Florence Henri, Andre Kertesz, Saul Leiter and, more recently, Alex Webb). In 2019 he was elected Secretary of the Pennant Hills Club, and also completed a Photographic Judges' course hosted by the Federation of Camera Clubs (FCC). In 2022 he was elected Secretary of the FCC, and in 2023 he organised the FCC's new Photographic Judges' courses held in Sydney and the Hunter.
