Welcome to the Pennant Hills Photographic Club

The Pennant Hills Photographic Club welcomes all photographers to join and participate in its events and by sharing knowledge to improve and enhance photographic skills. Our club aims to mentor, support, and educate its members, and to foster skills and passion for photography in a collegiate and enjoyable atmosphere.
For information on the club and how to join please view: Information about the club (opens in a new tab)

About Us

PHPC is a medium-sized club of around 50-60 members. Our members range in skill from enthusiastic novices to experienced photographers. The club has a few members who are judges.

We have a number of members who run the mentoring program for our newer members to learn the capabilities of their camera(s). We are large enough to support the growth of members but small enough to be a community, where all members can know each other. The club is here to challenge us to get the best from ourselves and our cameras

Photo Rally Update

We have just been advised that the MV Baragoola, the former Manly ferry that was built in 1922, and which those members that participated on Saturday 21st July 2018 visited, will now open to the public on Sundays between noon and 4pm (a small donation, e.g. a gold coin, would be appreciated). So if you missed the visit, or want to go again, these open periods are your opportunity.  The ferry has an interesting history and is a good photography subject.

Entry onto the MV Baragoola can be made via the Balls Head end of Tunnel 2 located beneath the coal loader platform at The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability which is on the western side of the Waverton Peninsula and which is within the permitted boundary of the PHPC Rally. The Photo Rally rules are here: PHPC Photo Rally 2018

Important! Please note that not all areas on the Baragoola are safe and that strict guidelines are enforced to ensure the safety of the public.

This note is for information only and members should be aware that PHPC will not accept any liability for personal injury whilst on board the vessel.

Competition 1806 Results Are Available

Dear Members,

The results of Competition 1806 (Open & Set – Urban Landscape) are now available for you to see.  The instructions for viewing competition images and results can be viewed by clicking on the following link. They are also on the Club Documents Page.

PHPC MyPhotoClub Instruction – Viewing Completed Competitions

Some feedback to members concerning entering competitions:

  1. Once again, no more than two (2) entries of any media type (i.e. Colour Prints, Mono Prints, Digital Images, Small Prints, regardless of whether they are Open or Set subject) are permitted in a single competition. Excess entries will be disqualified. The wording in the Comp Rules and Categories V4 2018 has been updated to hopefully leave no doubt.
  2. Please check your on-line entries to be sure they are as you intended.  If entries are not presented on the competition night in the category / subject they were entered in, they are liable to be disqualified.  Such incidents also confuse the judging and marking process terribly.

Well done to all entrants in contributing to another interesting and high-quality competition.

Dear PHPC Members,

Our Photo Rally will be held on the 21st July 2018 in the area know as The Waverton Peninsula and Balls Head. On the day of the Rally we have an on-board inspection of the MV Baragoola a former Manly ferry that first sailed in 1922.

Also some limited reserved seating has been secured at the Coal Loader Café for lunch.

Details of the above events, the area to be visited, and Rally rules are contained in the flyer that accompanies this email.

[Note that a dialogue box may appear asking you to open the PDF file in full screen. Click ‘Yes’ and press ‘Escape’ to go back to normal viewing.]

The Rally area has a long and interesting past and I hope that you will take the time to visit the recommended links included in the document.

This is one of the most challenging Rallies that PHPC has organised so I wish you the very best in capturing your images that will be judged on the 20th August 2018.

Reminder – Competition 1806 Closes at Midnight on Saturday 14th July 2018

A reminder to all members that Competition 1806 which has both Open and Set categories will close at midnight on Saturday 14th July 2018. The Set topic is “Urban Landscape – an image of two or more buildings in their street environment”.

If you have not done so already, please prepare your photos, enter them on the MyPhotoClub website, print your labels and attach them to the back of the prints. It is good practice to print your labels immediately after submitting your entry as you cannot print them after the competition closes. A good idea is to “Print to PDF” and save the file for when you need it and you can then print it when and as often as needed.

Instructions for entering a competition are on the Club Documents page and at this link: PHPC MyPhotoClub Instruction – Entering a Competition

As this is both an Open and Set competition, please be sure to select the correct category (Open or Set) for the media you are using (Small Prints, Colour Prints, Mono Prints, and Digital Image).

As usual, if you have any difficulties or questions, please contact the Competition Secretary, Tony Strasser on 0408-406-519 or at competition@phpc.org.au.

Good luck with your entries! See you at the judging on the evening of the 16th July 2018.

Notice of Special General Meeting on 6th August 2018

PENNANT HILLS PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB INC.

 NOTICE OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING

TO BE HELD AT 7.45PM ON MONDAY 6TH AUGUST 2018

at the Uniting Church hall, Corner of Boundary Rd and Bellamy Street, Pennant Hills

PURPOSE: The purpose of the meeting is to approve a special resolution to adopt a new Club Constitution.

MOTION: That the Pennant Hills Photographic Club adopt a new and revised Constitution based on the NSW Department of Fair Trading Model Constitution for incorporated associations as distributed with this notice of meeting.

BACKGROUND: Members who attended the last AGM will recall that the immediate past-president proposed that the outgoing committee be able to assist the new incoming committee in managing the club’s affairs until the end of the year. Functions such as trophies, the presentation night, and finalising next year’s calendar, which all happen at the end of the year are difficult to transfer to new committee members in the very short term available. Our current Constitution makes no allowance for this to occur.

In addition, our current Constitution is old though it appears to have been based on an earlier version of a Model Constitution. NSW Fair Trading have a newer version available. For those interested in accessing a clean copy of the model, it can be found here:http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/Cooperatives_and_associations/Incorporating_an_association/About_the_constitution/Model_constitution.page

Organisations adopting the Model Constitution verbatim automatically have their Constitution updated whenever Fair Trading update the Model (refer to the cover page). However in order to give effect to what was discussed at the last AGM we have had to modify the Model; and because that negates the automatic updating the Committee have taken the opportunity to make a limited number of other minor changes to the model to suit the club’s operation. In short, the proposed new Constitution is only changed from the Model to the minor extent it has been necessary.

ATTACHMENTS: Attached to this message are three documents for your consideration:

  1. The Club’s existing Constitution – PHPC constitution
  2. A marked up copy of the Model Constitution showing the changes made to adapt it to PHPC (NOTE – this copy has no proper pagination and table of contents) – PHPC_constitution_draft_3_mark_up
  3. A clean copy of the document with pagination and a correct table of contents – PHPC_constitution_draft_3 (clean)

COMMENTS: There are some differences in the new Model compared to our existing Constitution such as:

  1. A reduction from 20% to 5% of the club membership who may requisition the Committee to convene a Special General Meeting (Section 27)
  2. The quorum for general meetings is reduced from 10 members to 5 members (Section 29)
  3. There is no longer any provision for proxy voting (Section 35)
  4. There is provision for use of technology at meetings (Section 37)
  5. In the Model Constitution we are referred to as an “Association”. We have not attempted to change that because we were trying to move away from the Model as little as possible.

The changes relating to the outgoing Committee helping the incoming Committee are at Section 13(d). Section 13(e) was added to acknowledge the fact that the Committee has a set of bylaws to assist it in running the Club.

Weekend Away and Outing – Gulgong/Mudgee Area

Hi all members

Planning for our weekend away in the Gulgong / Mudgee area on the weekend of 25th &  26th August 2018 is well underway.

Everyone is invited to come along for the weekend and enjoy some photography (maybe some wines), a meal or two and great company.

Thank you to those that have registered interest so far.  If you wish to come along and haven’t yet registered interest please let Tony Strasser know, including whether you are bringing anyone else (for restaurant booking purposes) and whether you will be joining the Mudgee Observatory visit.  We will need to confirm numbers with them.

It is a flexible weekend. Some of us will choose to stay 3 nights (Friday to Sunday) others 1 night or 2 – it is totally up to you. Photography wise you can choose where and what you would like to see and photograph. This is also an opportunity to ask questions and learn something new about your photography.

We will send out an agenda soon advising details. Find attached information on the area and the observatory as well as accommodation ideas – we have suggested the Ten Dollar Town Motel or choose your own, and you are advised to book early. If you are travelling alone or don’t have transport let me know and we can see if there is anyone who would like to car pool (sharing costs).

PHPC Weekend Outing 2018 – Gulgong and Environs information sheet

Gulgong Hotels Trivago 3Jun2018 – list of accommodation with indicative prices – please book soon.  Members going need to book their own accommodation.

Mudgee Observatory – We have booked the Mudgee Observatory for 7:30pm on Saturday 25th August 2018. We will have dinner beforehand in Gulgong (or Mudgee depending on numbers and available venues) at about 5:30pm.  We can car-pool to get to the Observatory and then back to our hotels.  The cost is $15 per person payable to the observatory on the night. Rug up as it will be cold.  Our hosts will explain astro-photography and show us their equipment as well as allow us to take photographs with a telescope (Canon mount only).  It will be a full-moon so only the moon and the brighter stars and planets will be visible.

I, for one, am looking forward to this weekend. I have visited Mudgee a few times and have thoroughly enjoyed it as it is a beautiful part of the world.  I can’t wait to see what Gulgong has to offer. Not to mention spending time with like-minded members of the club.  I hope that you can join in for a photography weekend away!
