About Us

PHPC is a medium-sized club of around 40-50 members. Our members range in skill from enthusiastic novices to experienced photographers. The club has a few members who are judges.

We have a number of members who run the mentoring program for our newer members to learn the capabilities of their camera(s). We are large enough to support the growth of members but small enough to be a community, where all members can know each other. The club is here to challenge us to get the best from ourselves and our cameras

Weekend Away and Outing – Gulgong/Mudgee Area

Hi all members

Planning for our weekend away in the Gulgong / Mudgee area on the weekend of 25th &  26th August 2018 is well underway.

Everyone is invited to come along for the weekend and enjoy some photography (maybe some wines), a meal or two and great company.

Thank you to those that have registered interest so far.  If you wish to come along and haven’t yet registered interest please let Tony Strasser know, including whether you are bringing anyone else (for restaurant booking purposes) and whether you will be joining the Mudgee Observatory visit.  We will need to confirm numbers with them.

It is a flexible weekend. Some of us will choose to stay 3 nights (Friday to Sunday) others 1 night or 2 – it is totally up to you. Photography wise you can choose where and what you would like to see and photograph. This is also an opportunity to ask questions and learn something new about your photography.

We will send out an agenda soon advising details. Find attached information on the area and the observatory as well as accommodation ideas – we have suggested the Ten Dollar Town Motel or choose your own, and you are advised to book early. If you are travelling alone or don’t have transport let me know and we can see if there is anyone who would like to car pool (sharing costs).

PHPC Weekend Outing 2018 – Gulgong and Environs information sheet

Gulgong Hotels Trivago 3Jun2018 – list of accommodation with indicative prices – please book soon.  Members going need to book their own accommodation.

Mudgee Observatory – We have booked the Mudgee Observatory for 7:30pm on Saturday 25th August 2018. We will have dinner beforehand in Gulgong (or Mudgee depending on numbers and available venues) at about 5:30pm.  We can car-pool to get to the Observatory and then back to our hotels.  The cost is $15 per person payable to the observatory on the night. Rug up as it will be cold.  Our hosts will explain astro-photography and show us their equipment as well as allow us to take photographs with a telescope (Canon mount only).  It will be a full-moon so only the moon and the brighter stars and planets will be visible.

I, for one, am looking forward to this weekend. I have visited Mudgee a few times and have thoroughly enjoyed it as it is a beautiful part of the world.  I can’t wait to see what Gulgong has to offer. Not to mention spending time with like-minded members of the club.  I hope that you can join in for a photography weekend away!

Playing With Soft Focus Equipment Workshop

Many thanks to Phil Weir who led a very instructive workshop on how to achieve soft focus in our photographs.  Phil’s years of experience as a professional photographer were evident, and the techniques and array of equipment he showed us were very interesting.

The presentation Phil gave is attached to this post and is also linked to the Club Documents page. Play With Soft Focus Equipment

We were also instructed in how to pose and light subjects for portrait photography. Some examples follow.

Competition 1804 Results Have Been Published

The results of Competition 1804 (Open & Set – People In Life) are now available for you to see.  The instructions for viewing competition images and results can be viewed by clicking on the following link. They are also on the Club Documents Page.

PHPC MyPhotoClub Instruction – Viewing Completed Competitions

Some members have been making comments on and discussing the photos which is great.  Please do keep the discussion respectful to both members and the judges.

We have improved with respect to meeting deadlines with just a couple of people needing assistance to post their entries.  If you do need assistance then please email competition@phpc.org.au with sufficient time before the deadline to allow help to be given.

Here again are some points for entrants that will ease your task of using the MyPhotoClub systems and also make it easier for judging and scoring:

  1. Leave yourself plenty of time by entering well before the deadline. Some people did leave it till the last minute.  Things do go wrong from time to time (e.g. Internet down, printer not working, forgotten passwords etc), but leaving it till the very last minute makes it difficult for us to help you and you may miss out on entering the competition. All remaining competitions for the rest of the year are open to entries,so why not start adding entries early to avoid the last-minute rush?
  2. Entrants must print and attach the system-generated labels to their prints.  The labels provide the information we need to identify the entries and the entrants during the competition.  We will toughen our response to non-compliance and so we need your cooperation to avoid any unfortunate incidents of disqualification.  Do print your labels when you enter your images on the system.  Label printing is available on the entry page immediately after initial submission.  The button is at the bottom of the entry form.  You cannot print them after the competition closes.  It is best to print them on an A4 sheet with the print size set to 50%, cut them out, and glue or stick them to the back of the print with double-sided tape.
  3. Please make sure you enter the correct competition category. We had about 10 entries that were entered in the incorrect Open/Set category.  Correcting these errors consumes a lot of time and we’d rather not have to do it.  Most competitions from now are both open and set. You can check and alter your entries anytime before deadline. It is wise to go back and verify your entry as being what you intended. Remember Open awards are worth fewer points than Set awards, so the little bit of effort to check may make a difference in your competition results.

Congratulations everyone again on a successful competition.  Enjoy browsing the entries.

Reminder: Competition 1804 Closes at Midnight on Saturday 19th May 2018

A gentle reminder that the next Competition, 1804 Open & Set – People in Life, will close tonight (Saturday 19th May 2018) at midnight.  Please get your entries in today if you have not already done so.

Also, please check that you have entered in the correct subject category (Open or Set) and media category (Small Prints, Colour Prints, Mono Prints or Digital).  In the last competition some entries were incorrectly entered which necessitated a good deal of extra work by the administrators to correct.

Looking forward to seeing your entries at the Club on Monday night, 21st May 2018!

Monday Night 7th May 2018 – Change of Presentation

Hi everyone

On Monday night 7th May Philip Weir was going to give a presentation, unfortunately for us his work commitments will not allow this. Instead Don Munro will give a presentation on Composition. Please bring your camera gear as there will be exercises after his presentation. This is also a good opportunity to ask any questions you have to other members.

Thanks

Nancy
