About Us

PHPC is a medium-sized club of around 40-50 members. Our members range in skill from enthusiastic novices to experienced photographers. The club has a few members who are judges.

We have a number of members who run the mentoring program for our newer members to learn the capabilities of their camera(s). We are large enough to support the growth of members but small enough to be a community, where all members can know each other. The club is here to challenge us to get the best from ourselves and our cameras

PHPC Meeting Update

Dear members,

I hope all is well with you and your family. It was good to see a number of our members attend our first zoom meeting. It was a different way to meet and we did have a few technical difficulties but we manage to get back on track (sorry to those few we lost). It is still a great way to stay in touch with everyone.

At our committee meeting held Monday night we decided the following:

  • Meeting Monday 4th May via Zoom
    • presentation on Architecture run by our member Jeff Akers
    • Top Shot Winners for Creative to give a talk on how they created their winning entry (same as we do at our meetings)
    • Discussion Time – discussion on photography queries members might have eg printing – a zoom meeting notification will be sent out soon
  • Meeting Monday 18th May via Zoom – Open & Set – Nature. Per the Australian Photographic Society definition. See https://www.a-p-s.org.au/index.php/nature-definition – a zoom meeting notification will be sent out a few days before
  • Committee Meeting – Monday 25th May via Zoom
  • Meeting Monday 1st June via Zoom
    • Presentation on Astroimaging for Beginners by Kym Haines – a zoom meeting notification will be sent out a few days before
    • Question time/Discussion
  • Meeting Monday 15th June via Zoom – Competition Open & Set – Architecture – please note we have added an open category for this competitiona zoom meeting notification will be sent out a few days before
  • Outing for Monday 29th June to Strathfield has been postponed
  • ** Please note for the Competition for 16th November Our Club – we are looking at changing this to Our Isolation. This will only be changed if we are not able to hold any outings for this year. I suggest everyone start taking photos suitable for Our Isolation – we will update this when we get closer.

As our club is reliant on members we need ways to get our club exposed to attract new members, we have decided to add the Top Shop winner’s photos (low resolution and with permission) for each competition to our facebook page with an editorial/technical info from the photographer.

I know we are in isolation but we feel that it is still a great time for photography. There are so many tutorials you can be watching on YouTube about your camera or about certain aspects/techniques of photography. There have been so many offers of ‘free learning’ which we can take advantage of – Nikon is one that has some tutorials for free and I have learnt things from watching these videos presented by professional photographers. Not to mention the books out there. Then take your camera outside and photograph what is around you and there is a lot – this will get your ‘eye’ looking for great shots.

Practice, practice and more practice is a way of learning and now is no different – get your camera, go outside and practice or practice inside shots eg still life – make your own light box, take a torch outside, try photographing birds or flowers or rain or light techniques. My advice is pick one technique and practice that. A good book for basics is Understanding Exposure and Understanding Shutter Speed both by Bryan Peterson and there are plenty of others out there. Get to know your camera so you are not wasting time in the field searching for settings. The more photos you take the more you learn! There is a saying ‘Practice makes Perfect’!! Be creative and most of all be you!

I will send out a zoom invite for Monday night and I look forward to seeing you all then.

Till then take care.

PHPC Competition 2003 Open/Set-Creative via ZOOM

Monday Night 20th April 2020 at 7.30pm

Hi all members

I hope you and your family are all staying safe and well. It is certainly difficult and unusual times and I’m not sure where we will end up. Self isolation has some positives – we are doing lots of yard work that we have put off for so long, but it has its negatives – no toilet roll, pasta and flour in the supermarkets as everyone is hoarding and also the lack of contact with family and friends and of course our favourite photography group. I know I am missing out meeting nights.

This is how it will work:

  • Log into Zoom at 7.30pm – details below
  • Meeting to start at 7.45pm sharp
  • Greeting by President
  • View all photos by sharing Tony’s screen – Tony Strasser
    • The judge will not attend this zoom meeting but will judge the photos on MyPhotoClub after photos close – points awarded will go to points score as per usual and members will be notified of the results 1 week after the meeting.
    • After the meeting every member can log into MyPhotoClub and become a judge – we would like to use this a special activity for all members. This gives you, the photographer, an opportunity to experience critiquing other peoples photos, which in turn will help you to take better photos. These scores do not go towards the yearly point score.
  • Open discussion
  • Meeting closes

ZOOM details:

  • Join Zoom Meeting
    https://zoom.us/j/7151375514?pwd=Y3czMElBTk5ueklvd2llYlJiTmhaUT09
  • Meeting ID: 715 137 5514

  • Find your local number: https://zoom.us/u/atB4fQk1m
  • Meeting ID: 715 137 5514
    Password: 775024

Zoom meetings are they way to go in these unusual times and we hope to see every member attend this meeting and help make this a success.

I will send a Zoom reminder out a few days before. Please make sure that all your photos are uploaded onto MyPhotoClub by midnight Saturday 18th April.

Please keep an eye open for further communications regarding this meeting. If a trial zoom meeting beforehand will help members become familiar with zoom please let me know.

Kind regards and stay healthy

FREE Live 1hr Photography presentation every weekday!

By Adam Williams

Hi all,

I hope everyone is staying well 🙂 Adam Williams here, I have visited and talked at most of the clubs on this list.

For more information about me, you can look up www.australianphotographer.com I am also the teacher behind www.easywayphotography.com.au

The reason for this email is that I am producing a FREE 1hr photography presentation Live on YouTube each weekday at 10am. It is a really positive group and I think many of your members would love the distraction.
Monday – Friday for roughly 1hour at 10am
The easiest way for your club member to tune in every day is to have YouTube send you a reminder each time I go Live or post a new video.

How:

1. Click here – http://www.youtube.com/c/AdamWilliamsCreative
2. Click the red “Subscribe” Button
3. Click Yes to “Get Notifications”

That’s all there is to it, now as soon as I post a new video or go Live Youtube will send you an email and notify you on your phone!
I am doing Live photo critique tomorrow much like most of you would normally do at Camera Club.

Hope to see you there LIVE tomorrow!

Take care
Adam
P.S. Lastly, you can check out the 6 episodes (and all my other videos) that have already been recorded by clicking here – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCidPoa6itfCrB_0VzhDG8WA/videos

Covid-19 Precautions at Meetings

Club meetings’ risk minimisation guidelines until further notice

As you probably know, our government and public health officials have instituted guidelines and requirements to slow the spread of the Covid-19 Coronavirus in our community. The main recommendations are to maintain social distance and to practice good hygiene, particularly thoroughly washing hands before touching one’s face or food.

Otherwise, the official advice is that we conduct business as usual for the time being, which includes our club meetings. Nevertheless, we are mindful of our members’ and visitors’ health and so would like to take the following precautions at our meetings, starting this evening (Monday the 16th of March 2020) until further notice:

  1. Anyone that has returned from overseas travel is requested not to attend our meetings for 14 days after returning.
  2. Anyone not feeling well, and particular if coughing or sneezing is asked to not attend our meetings until they have recovered.
  3. Meeting participants are asked to thoroughly wash their hands immediately before and after attending our meetings.
  4. Meeting participants are asked to maintain a respectful distance from each other to lower any contamination risk.
  5. Those handling prints are at particular cross-contamination risk and so will wear gloves for their own protection. If entering prints into competitions please place them where directed by the handlers and refrain from touching other people’s prints. Please also collect your prints personally immediately before the tea break. We are seeking to minimise the number of people physically handling the prints.
  6. The owners of prints may, at their own option, wipe the mattes down with an antiseptic cloth before taking them back so that any contamination from the handlers’ gloves is removed. We are endeavouring to provide a supply of antiseptic wipes at the meeting for your use, if they can be bought.
  7. At the meeting tea break please wash your hands and practice good food hygiene and do not handle food items that you are not consuming yourselves. We will attempt to provide individually packaged biscuits.
  8. We do not control the hygiene of the hall we are using so please be aware of not handling surfaces that have been touched by many unknown others. Use a handkerchief or tissue as a barrier.

While all this may sound extreme, we are in the grip of a pandemic and so we are taking a prudent approach to protect your health and wellbeing. There are many seniors among our membership who are more susceptible to the adverse effects of Covid-19. The risk in our community of contracting Covid-19 is still small and you should feel safe coming to our meetings.

We continue to monitor the situation and official advice and directives and will act accordingly. This advice will be amended from time to time as new information comes to hand. We hope we will not have to suspend our activities altogether. Please look after each other.
